PrayBar

Prayer times in your Mac's menu bar.

PrayBar keeps your next prayer and the time left up there, where you'll see it, and otherwise stays out of your way.

Today's five prayers, with the next one marked. The countdown changes once a minute.

Example: Amman on 1 October 2026, Muslim World League, Standard Asr.

No setup required.

  1. Open PrayBar.
  2. Allow your Mac's approximate location.

Your next prayer appears as soon as a location fix arrives. PrayBar then asks once whether to keep its defaults, and offers to start at login:

Everything else is optional: manual coordinates and time zone, 12 calculation methods, Standard or Hanafi Asr, a clock instead of a countdown, and notifications.

Works offline.

PrayBar never connects to the internet. It isn't allowed to: macOS only lets a sandboxed app go online if the app asks, and PrayBar doesn't ask.

Everything the signed app is allowed to do, as macOS sees it, and the one thing it would need to go online.

Prayer times are calculated on your Mac, and reminders are scheduled with macOS itself. PrayBar has nowhere to send your location, or anything else.

Your Mac's Location Services finds your position and may need a network connection. Once PrayBar has coordinates, or if you enter them yourself, prayer calculations and reminders work offline.

0.0% CPU, nearly all the time.

PrayBar 1.0 ran for ten minutes on a MacBook Pro with an M1 Pro, and its CPU use was read every five seconds, to one decimal place like Activity Monitor. 109 of the 120 readings were 0.0%, and in 76 of them it used no CPU at all.

CPU %, one row per minute. The column of 0.1s and 0.2s comes just after each minute turns, when the countdown changes. The extra one in the 7:26 row, at 7:27:21, wasn't on a minute.

Average CPUAbout 0.01%. 0.012% in this run, and 0.008–0.015% in earlier runs.
Clock mode60 of 60 readings at 0.0% after a fresh launch
MemoryAbout 11.5 MiB until you first open Settings. About 25–30 MiB after that, because macOS keeps the Settings frameworks loaded.
Disk writes0 bytes while idle
NetworkNone from PrayBar. macOS Location Services may use the network to find you.
TimersOne, about once a minute in countdown mode; in clock mode, only at the next prayer or midnight. A location lookup adds a 30-second timeout.
SleepNever kept awake by PrayBar. It holds no power assertions.

Measured 2 October 2026 on PrayBar 1.0: MacBook Pro (M1 Pro, 16 GB), macOS 15.6.1, countdown mode with notifications on, menu and Settings closed. One Mac, so yours will vary a little. A title that changes needs a little work once a minute, so it is never literally zero. How it was measured, every run, and the raw data.

Only what you need.

Every feature it leaves out is one less thing running on your Mac.

PrayBar will

  • Show your next prayer and the minutes until it, or its time.
  • List today's five prayers.
  • Notify you when a prayer begins, and remind you 1 to 120 minutes before. Both off until you turn them on.
  • Use the method and Asr you follow.
  • Follow your Mac's time zone when you travel.
  • Start at login, if you ask it to.

PrayBar won't

  • Show up in your Dock.
  • Connect to the internet or ask for an account.
  • Track your location in the background. It takes one reading, then stops.
  • Guess. If it can't find you, it says so.
  • Play its own sounds or break through Focus.
  • Keep your Mac awake.
